To be honest, I have NO idea how people keep their homes clean. Since Patrick and I are both naturally messy people, it’s a constant battle just to keep our (tiny) 1 bedroom apartment neat. Add in a dog that prefers our couch to his bed and…yeah. It’s not the best.
Living in such tight quarters means we really have to stay on top of things when it comes to cleaning and whatnot. After I recently complained that our couch smelled like dog (my #1 greatest fear is for our house to smell like dog), Patrick suggested we buy some Febreze.
No. Just no, y’all. Ingredients in Febreze have been shown to be toxic, made worse by the fact that you inhale said toxic ingredients. Personally, I’d rather smell dog than kill my brain cells. (In general, you want to stay away from artificially fragranced items that you inhale: spray sunscreens, hair products with scent, any sort of Glade plug-in.)
Thankfully, nature has given us essential oils: natural fragrances that are much safer than whatever the heck is in Febreze. (Shudder.) Below is a natural air (and couch) freshener we’ve been using for a bit that I absolutely love. The smell isn’t overwhelming and I promise it won’t make your home smell like an incense shop.
The small amount of eucalyptus helps dissolve pet odors, while the bergamot and lemon freshen things up. You can always switch out the oils based on personal preference, just make sure to test them on a bit of fabric before, say, dousing your entire couch. Vodka helps to suspend the oil in the air longer, and you can even take a little nip as you’re making this recipe. (Added bonus.)
