Happy (almost) spring y’all!
This time of year is 100% my favorite. The days are longer, windows are thrown open…fresh spring air just SMELLS good. I think I even get a tiny bit high from it. Just me?
In my former life as a teacher, this was about the time of year when things all start to click into place. Kids start understanding how to walk down the hallways in a semi-civilized fashion, you’re seeing progress in students that struggled, and it’s almost summer. Or it feels like it, anyways. Summer anticipation = almost as good as actual summer. Add on the fact that I have a spring birthday and there’s nothing about this season that I don’t love.
You know what else I love? Dinners with my husband where we actually sit and talk to one another. Patrick and I have really been making an effort lately to sit down and eat at the table instead of in front of the TV. (Soooo tempting to just eat in front of the TV.) Patrick has been working long hours at his new job, so dinner a few times during the week is the only quality time we get to spend together. We try to really make it special by using our pretty linen napkins, putting on some music, and lighting some candles. I inherited some gorgeous candlesticks from my aunts that help to make our dinner so beautiful and special. (Thanks Aunt Vicki and Aunt Sarah!)
If you read my Holiday Home Tour post awhile back, you’ll remember that our “dining room” was…beige. Just a lot of blah and brown and boring. I’m happy to say that with a little patience (ok, a lot) and some luck I was able to pull off my dining room inspiration exactly how I imagined it. When does that ever happen?
Our dining room upgrade was minor, and included the following:
- Change out chair covers
- Add armchairs to the end of the table with these cute pillows
- Move bar/storage shelf to next wall over
Sounds easy, right? Until you factor in that even my IKEA wish list + bar stools for the kitchen were upwards of $500+. That’s a lot to drop on things we didn’t really need.
That’s where the patience comes in. I’m a member of a few Facebook yard sale/Buy Sell Trade groups here in Charlotte and have scored some cray-cray deals just by keeping an eye out. Over the course of a few months, I scored one of my IKEA rattan chairs for $40, then found eight of the white chair covers I wanted for $40. (They’re normally $30/each.) The best part is that with eight covers, I can chill out about the white getting ruined. Spill some red wine? Drop some spaghetti? Knock over some chips and salsa? No big deal. I’ll just put on a new cover because they were basically free. That means my upgrades that were going to be $350 came out to less than $200. Holla!
I’m obsessed with this round gold mirror, which was a gift from my Aunt Maureen. Do I have the best/most stylish aunts or what?
Side note: when I opened the patio door to let all that delightful fresh air flow, some leaves blew in. I generally don’t have leaves from the outdoors scattered across my living area.
On to the kitchen! It’s pretty close to perfect, but I wanted a few bar stools to make it extra cozy. I absolutely love having an island, and wanted to encourage visitors (or Patrick!) to hang out while I cooked or piddled around the kitchen. I scored these super cute (and comfy!) stools from Target, and they really help to warm up the space. We’ve actually used them quite a bit despite the fact our dining room table is about five steps away. Springtime is making me extra grateful to live in a place with amazing natural light.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to get high on this warm, pollen-filled air.
